Internet of Things


  • In your own words, define Internet of Things
    • Internet of Things is the connection of every devices that have the switch of on and off will automatically function based on the information given by the person through Internet.
  • What brought this theory about?
    • Everything that can be connected will be connected. It refers to all devices be connected and have an exchange of data through wireless networks. 
  • Do you like the concept of IoT ? Why or why not?
    • At first, I liked the concept of IoT as it shows the development of our technology and networks and helps us in our daily lives. But as I read, I changed my mind and did not like the concept of it anymore. Internet of Things means that everything will be controlled, not by me but the devices. The devices will automatically function and do their task. In addition to it, my information might be leaked as it is connected to a lot of networks that others may see it. Also, it is not applicable for the Philippines today. Our internet connection is not good — it’s really bad. There might be flaws and interruption in the connection that devices may not be able to function. 
  • In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?
    • When we checked-in in Okada last April, their lights, temperature of the room, tv volume and channels are controlled by their tablet. Although there are switches for them, the tablet still serves as the remote control for these devices. With just one click, it will adjust to its settings.
  • How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
    • In the next 3 to 5 years, Internet of Things will be introduced to us however it will not function as good as it is. The Philippines is not yet that inclined with internet or the connections of networks as seen today that’s why I think it’s not yet the right time, even in the next 3 to 5 years, unless sudden changes of these things will be fixed now, then IoT might bring a good change to the Filipino society. If that happens, Filipino society will hopefully have a more convenient and easier access to everything and Filipinos will not have difficulty anymore dealing with the problems related to technologies and connections. Filipino society will hopefully be more productive with IoT.
  • What do you think is the relationship / cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?
    • I think the relationship or cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy is that the Internet of things will not be produced or introduced without knowing the media and information literacy. Media and information will be utilized together for developing the Internet of Things.

    A local government official was charged of graft and corruption and was suspended from his office. The government official announced that the charges were all fabricated and that he will not step down from his office. A large group of supporters are present to protest. They barricaded the building where the official has once taken office. A struggle seems to start breaking out between the protesters and the police. If you will be a reporter, are you going to use the conventional way of how the each media will broadcast the given scenario? If I will be a reporter, I will still use the conventional way of how the each media will broadcast the given scenario because those are known to people in giving reliable news and happenings around us or in our country.     "Language is a source of misunderstanding." -McLuhan, 1964 Language is a instrument or medium that we use to communicate. If we misuse it, we can disseminate wrong information. We also have different languages that can cause different interpretations. Language is also used in nonverbal, some are intended for the receiver but some are not which also causes misunderstanding. Language also comes with culture. We have different cultures that others may fund it wrong or disrespect to them. Does the user's/audience's own background or experience affect the interpretation of messages? How? Yes. We all have different beliefs and perspectives that we believed in.
