The Evolution of Traditional to New Media (Lecture)

There are four roles and functions of media in a democratic society — channel, watchdog, resource center, and advocate. Media is used as a channel as it serves as an instrument for people to communicate, share, and give information. It is also a watchdog which reveals the anomalous or corrupt activities of the government and the private sector. In addition, media is a resource center that gives and keeps information for the usage of people. Lastly, media is an advocate that connects the division of digital through its various sources or formats.



Media has different ways affecting my life. It is a form of both leisure and learning. It serves as my stress-reliever like watching videos, dramas, and movies which helps me relax by engaging to the different forms of media. Also, it is a source of learning that influences my ideas by the information given through media. By these additional ideas, it will be used as the source of topics to be talked about in a communication. And in communication, it keeps me on interacting with people around me and exchanging thoughts with them that they also got have information they got from different media. Media also gives me the lessons or values in life because of the shows that were being watched. I also use the words in daily conversations that are being used or originated in the social media sites. Also, it provides me the information whenever I needed something such as the restaurants that we wanted to eat at or the latest trends in the society.

Media plays a very important role in my life as it influences me in different ways. But I need to be intelligent and responsible for the things that the media influences me because not all information from the media are correct, true or appropriate for me.

A local government official was charged of graft and corruption and was suspended from his office. The government official announced that the charges were all fabricated and that he will not step down from his office. A large group of supporters are present to protest. They barricaded the building where the official has once taken office. A struggle seems to start breaking out between the protesters and the police. "Language is a source of misunderstanding." -McLuhan, 1964 Language is a instrument or medium that we use to communicate. If we misuse it, we can disseminate wrong information. We also have different languages that can cause different interpretations. Language is also used in nonverbal, some are intended for the receiver but some are not which also causes misunderstanding. Language also comes with culture. We have different cultures that others may fund it wrong or disrespect to them.
