Media and Information Languages (Lecture)
"Language is a source of misunderstanding." -McLuhan, 1964
- Language is a instrument or medium that we use to communicate. If we misuse it, we can disseminate wrong information. We also have different languages that can cause different interpretations.
- Language is also used in nonverbal, some are intended for the receiver but some are not which also causes misunderstanding.
- Language also comes with culture. We have different cultures that others may fund it wrong or disrespect to them.
- Yes. We all have different beliefs and perspectives that we believed in. Culture also affects, other may find it right or disrespect them.
Is it possible that a different individual derives a different meaning from the message? Explain.
- Yes. Since we have different ideas or experiences, one message like "I like you", may be interpreted with bad and good. For the bad one, the response to it may be "narinig ko na 'yan", probably because a relationship didn't work out for him/her. For its good meaning, it's just a pure love for the people/person you've said that to. We have different interpretations to a message based on our own experiences, ideas, and culture.
How these signs and symbols are used to make people in the community understand the message being conveyed?
- These signs and symbols will easily send or convey the message as it has already its message through the symbols used.
ENRICHMENT:
- What information codes, conventions and messages about our country is communicated through advertisements?
- New products, promos, business, latest news, health related (like smoking kills), and more are communicated through advertisements.
- If you are to create a postcard for a place or organization of your choice, what technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important information and create the desired impression? Why?
- If I were to create a postcard for a place or organization of my choice, I would use limited number of fonts, the color depends on the organization that I would choose but the colors must be appropriate to it, pictures of some events done by the organization, the things that the organization can offer, and the benefits that they would get in it. Information would be concise and the format would be appropriate and enough for the postcard. I would use these technical and symbolic codes not only to attract and convince people, but also convey accurate and exact information of the organization. No misleading images or symbols should be included in the postcard to not confuse and misinform the intended audience.
- How is understanding of the technical and symbolic codes contribute to media and information literacy?
- If people or media users understand the technical and symbolic codes, they will convey accurate and true pieces of information. The netizens or citizens that will see the advertisements or symbols would not be deceived by the media presented to them. Not only as a receiver of the information, people would also be aware of what to place in a media as a sender of information. They would know the proper use of the technical and symbolic codes that will make the media be more reliable.
